Spent the holiday at Uncle Spencer's house. Can I just say I love having family 10 minutes away!? We had a wonderful feast, complete with Pioneer Woman's Sweet Potato Casserole. Be jealous. It was an amazing feast, as Conner kept calling it.

Shep is a southern boy and loves his sweet tea. Wearing Uncle Caleb's shirt because we had a little spill.
Thankful for this crazy year and all the ways God has provided. Thankful for the experience Zack has gained here in Nashville and for continuing opportunities to learn and grow. Thankful for a new member to our family. Thankful that we have a house! Thankful for the generosity and love shown to us by our friends and family. We are blessed.Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556515126605553470noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6678837181397754832.post-4459898948916893532012-11-22T20:03:00.000-06:002012-11-22T20:03:28.788-06:00Peppermint Brownie RecipeOk, as promised, here is the recipe. It's funny. I used to make these all the time when Zack and I were dating. He loved them. I was looking through recipes and I realized it had been YEARS since I last made them. Felt a little bad and wanted to show my husband I still love him very much:)

Warning: the following contains huge amounts of butter.

Peppermint Brownies

Cake layer:
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
4 eggs (yes, you saw that right)
1 cup flour
1 16 oz can chocolate syrup

Mix in order given and bake in 13x9 pam @350 for 20 min. Chill.

First frosting:
2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 T milk
1/2 t peppermint flavoring
few drops green food coloring

Mix all of the above and pour over cooled cake. Refrigerate to set.

Second frosting:
1 cup chocolate chips
6 T butter

Melt. Stir well. Cool a little and then pour over green frosting. Refrigerate and then serve when set.

We lived in an apartment for 5 years and it definitely has its perks, but we have enjoyed having a home, with a yard these past few months! Our home is on the corner between a dead-end and a cul-de-sac, so very low traffic. There is a small playground down the street and lots of children. I miss Austin, but this neighborhood is a good fit for our family right now.

Here is a peek into our home. It has 3 bedrooms (one of which is Zack's office), 2 1/2 bath rooms and living rooms in both the upstairs and downstairs. We are loving the space. Our apartment would have fit in the upstairs of this house.

Part of living area. The fire place does work, so I'm hoping we can have a fire sometime this winter! It is much colder here. We have already had several nights below freezing and it's only November 3rd!
There are two rooms on either side of the entry way, but it's all open. We have our kitchen table on one side. This is the other side. Conner's school desk was my Mom's from when she was little. At some point we will refinish the top and get a little chair that matches better. Love this desk.
Master bedroom. This house as so much more natural light. We through our comforter away because after 3 babies, it was in rough shape. Just using a full-size one I had. Love the colors, just a bit small. Hope to get a new one someday, in the same style. Shopping for a new lamp. Any style ideas or places to look?
Living area, looking into the kitchen. The door there is the half bath. The kitchen has a breakfast nook area and I'd love a small table there someday and also some bar stools. There is so much cabinet space and a nice big stainless steel fridge!!
The boys room is definitely a work in progress. They have bunk beds now, but bedding is pretty far down the list. And then Shep broke their lamp. Life with boys. Pictures of J's little closet room coming soon!

Little sister is growing fast. The boys call her jewels. Uncle isaac started it and it fits her.

Month 5 was big for sister. She started sitting and has gotten two teeth (so far!). Yesterday, I saw her bunching her knees up will lying on the floor. Looks like she may start scooting soon. Both boys crawled at 7 mo. That's not too far away.

Both boys are playing soccer. They've enjoyed it and the games are highly entertaining.

Conner has improved a lot since the season began. He's finally getting a little more aggressive and scored a goal in their last game. He mostly just runs around, but he's starting to get in there and kick the ball more.

Shep is funny during the games. He becomes almost shy in those kinds of settings. He did the same thing in swim lessons. I think maybe it's the attention?? He gets aggressive in the wrong way and mostly wants to run around tackling people, usually his teammates, but he's learned a lot, too and enjoys it.

Practicing before the game. Conner was trying to kick the ball in the goal and was taking forever lining everything up just right. Shep got tired of waiting and just ran in and kicked it.

Reminding them which goal to kick it into. Good thing we have a girl on our team. She's the only one who pays attention and the only one who really has any idea of what's going on. Me: Conner, who won the game? Conner: Kyla won!! Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

We told the boys they could pick one ride and that they better enjoy it as much as it cost. This is the one they wanted to do. I think it was approximately a dollar per second. Zack and Conner vs Spencer and Shep.
Fun evening and totally worth the meltdowns at bedtime (I think:)Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556515126605553470noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6678837181397754832.post-51359615751058827612012-08-07T09:13:00.001-05:002012-08-07T09:13:13.793-05:00weight of caresSomeone shared this with me the other day.

The weight of the cares that are laid on us is meticulously measured by the one who "knows our frame" and "knows full well that we are dust." (Ps 103:14) Not a hair's weight more than we can sustain will be added to the load, but a load there must be for each of us, for we are in training. -Elisabeth Elliot

I admit, it often feels that God's forgotten we are like dust. The load feels too big or over-whelming. Grateful that even though I often fail to trust God's promises, He never fails to hear my prayers. His promises are always true.

"that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him, having the eyes of our hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which He has called you, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might..." Eph 1:17-19

"Fear lies at the unexamined core of who we are. Faith grows from the surpassing of fear in spite of its presence. It is not a denial of fear, but rather itself, acknowledges the fear and in fact uses it to engulf the fear itself, transforming it into th emost powerful, rather than debilitating force there is: love." -Surprised by Oxford
It's been a hard week. Harder than I thought it would be. Zack was gone a whole month last summer, but this has been harder. I think I was prepared mentally and emotionally for that trip, but all this happened so quickly and caught me off guard. One week we were in Austin, trying to sort things out, the next week we were gone and Zack was on his way to Nashville. It was a blur. I still haven't quite wrapped my brain around the fact that I'm not going back. I feel a little bit lost.

Someone reminded me yesterday to try to enjoy this time and not to miss what God has for me here. Not to miss the cute things my kids do or say. Not to miss the blessings. LORD, help me not to miss the blessings.

There was a huge stack of old newspapers waiting for the compost pile. Conner was obsessed with them and passing things out for people to read. "Here mom, read this. Read this because you like to read. You like to read the news. This is for you to read Mom. You can read it in your head. I'll read mine in my head, too" etc He handed me a paper dated back the end of June. It was the obituaries. I saw the young face of a soldier, just twenty-eight years old. He had a wife, probably my age and a baby. Thank you, God that even though I'm not with my husband today, I can still text him every 10 minutes, if I want to. I am so blessed. I know that young soldier's wife would change places with me in a heartbeat.

"The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance...You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore." Psalm 16: 6, 11
Took the boys on a date to the jump zone this morning. It's the first time I've been able to do something with just them since Julia arrived. I was going to take them each individually on a special date, but they both wanted their brother to come. Awww....they really do like each other!

Shep was a little freaked out that I was jumping and climbing with them. Guess I've gotten boring the past couple years. I was climbing after him, pretending to chase him and he said, "Just be Mommy, ok?" Then later I was talking in a silly voice and he said, "Use your own voice, Mommy." Can't a mommy have some fun?
Sister and I went on a little adventure a couple weeks ago. My grandma just turned 80 and my family was heading up there for a little visit. Thanks to my sweet brother and grandpa, Julia and I got to fly up to Iowa and surprise everyone! She was a traveling champ. We were even stuck on the plane in a thunderstorm for almost 2 hrs in Chicago and didn't arrive at my grandparent's house until 1 am!

It was such a fun time to relax and spend time with my grandma. I miss her so much! We spent one afternoon making bows. My grandma is a seamstress and has a cabinet full of old material scraps. It was fun to pick out pieces of material left over from outfits she made me when I was little.Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556515126605553470noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6678837181397754832.post-82791022205126786172012-08-01T16:20:00.003-05:002012-08-01T16:20:55.602-05:00new toy

I LOVE 3-4 month olds. It's such a happy age. They are so engaging, but not yet destroying your house. As Conner says, "Julia is turning into a delightful girl". Just a month ago, I wasn't sure what I was going to do with the fussy little thing. Conner is right. She is becoming quite delightful!Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556515126605553470noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6678837181397754832.post-21344586939550915632012-07-24T13:30:00.001-05:002012-07-24T13:30:08.821-05:00updateHi friends!

I just wanted to update you all on what is going on with the traveling Stantons. We're leaving Austin on Sunday and I may not be coming back. At this point there are no job opportunities for Zack in Austin, so we've had to begin looking elsewhere. We have been exploring some options in Nashville. Zack has been contacting people and has some connections out there. One of his brothers and his wife are also in Nashville and he knows some people in the music world, as well. Since Zack has not been able to land any sort of teaching job, he has been looking into orchestrating and arranging, which is a huge industry in Nashville. Zack is heading to Nashville next week to meet with some people and see if it might work for us. He's going to apply for non-music jobs, as well, just so we could have some steady income. There is a very strong possibility we will move to Nashville. We are excited at the possibility, but very over-whelmed at the long road still ahead of us. Moving there would be a start, but there is no job there right now. We would covet your prayers for direction and that God would open this door, if it's his will. If it doesn't look like Nashville is feasible at this point in time, we really have no idea what to do next.

It all feels very abrupt. I knew we might leave, but I was not really prepared that this might be our last week in Austin. You name the emotion, I'm probably feeling it right now:) Trying to be thankful for this opportunity to trust God and His plan, but today has been a hard day. Hope I can see a few of you before we head out!Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556515126605553470noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6678837181397754832.post-74574940520548870902012-07-14T21:25:00.003-05:002012-07-14T21:26:09.378-05:00friday fun

We had quite a bit of pool time this week. House sitting has it's perk, especially when they have a pool. Annie and Meg came over for a swim and picnic.

That's Shep under there. He stayed under there a good 5 minutes. I thought maybe he'd fallen asleep or something. He informed me on coming out, that he had been playing hide and seek with himself. I asked him if he had won and he replied, "Nope."

We were celebrating because Zack officially finished his dissertation. He presented two movements for his defense, but still have to write the third. It took a little longer than he had hoped ( I can't understand why, we've only just had a baby and lived in 3 different houses:), but it's DONE! He wrote a piano concerto with wind ensemble, which will be performed in VA in October!
I like having a four year old. It's fun to do big kid things, like VBS. Our church doesn't have VBS, yet, so I found a program at a different church. He was excited to go and meet new friends. I love how fast kids make friends. Here is a picture from "Crazy hair day"

Today was pajama day. Shep and I had bible study this morning and I let him wear his pajamas, so he could feel like he was apart of things. We've enjoyed our time together, but I know he wishes he could have gone, too. Sometimes, it's hard to be the little brother.

Grateful for the peace I have that God is working in our situation, even though I can't see it. Grateful for this opportunity to trust Him. Grateful for what he's doing, most importantly, in our hearts. He's teaching us patience, trust, humility, perseverance, and thankfulness, just to name a few things.

For those of you who are praying, we still have no answers yet. Our situation is pretty much the same. We're living out of suitcases and waiting to see what God's doing. No job yet. As hard as it's been not having our own home, so grateful for all the beautiful places we've called home the past few weeks. We're continuing to explore many different job options right now. Thanks for all the prayers, friends!
This has been my prayer, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope." Romans 15:13Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556515126605553470noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6678837181397754832.post-54731539574227894312012-06-30T10:27:00.001-05:002012-06-30T10:29:05.430-05:00the good God has in mindI've been reading another excellent book called Respectable Sins by Jerry Bridges. Here are a few things that have encouraged me and I hope that they encourage you!

This first passage is expounding on the very familiar passage of Romans 8:28, but in a little different light that I had thought about it before.

"Just as our physical muscles will not grow in strength without exercise, so our spiritual life will not grow apart from circumstances that challenge us...If we easily become anxious (that's me!), there will be ample opportunities to deal with the sin of anxiety. God does not tempt us to sin, but He does bring or allow circumstances to come into our lives that give us opportunity to put to death the particular subtle sins that are characteristic of our individual lives. It is obvious that we can deal with the activity of our subtle sins only as the circumstances we encounter expose them."

"...the truth I want us to see now is that God is in control of every circumstance and every even in our lives, and He uses them, often in some mysterious way, to change us more into the likeness of Christ."

"Romans 8:28 is a text many of us go to for encouragement in tough times. 'We know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.' However, while that passage is indeed one of all-around encouragement to us, Paul is actually talking about our spiritual transformation. The 'good' of verse 28 is explained in verse 29 to be the conformity to the image of God's son This means, then, that the Holy Spirit is at work in use through our circumstances to make us more like Christ."

I think prior to reading this I had thought of this verse in a much more temporal light. The "good" being actually the outcome of a situation. Does that make sense? God does redeem difficult situations and will make something beautiful from them, but the good he ultimately has in mind in this verse is my sanctification. He's working all of my life's situations for that good end.Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556515126605553470noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6678837181397754832.post-37091096411121109192012-06-21T19:38:00.000-05:002012-06-21T19:38:22.512-05:00Choosing GratitudeOver the past week I've been reading Choosing Gratitude by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. I've been reminded that gratitude IS a choice and it's often the hard choice. My default is whine rather than to worship. I wanted to share a few quotes that encouraged and convicted me.

This first one is from the forward:

"And so I've been giving thanks for most of my paralyzed life. Not only giving thanks 'in everything, ' as one part of the bible tells us, but 'always giving thanks to God the Father for everything' as another part commands. Most of us are able to thank God for His grace, comfort and sustaining power in a trial, but we don't thank Him for the problem, just finding Him in it. But many decades in a wheelchair have taught me to not segregate my Savior from the suffering he allows, as though a broken neck- or in your case, a broken ankle, heart or home- merely 'happens' and then God shows up after the fact to wrestle something good out of it. No, the God of the bible is bigger than that. Much bigger." -Joni Eareckson Tada

Instigators of Ingratitude
1. Unrealistic expectations
2. Forgetfulness
3. Entitlement
4. Comparison
5. Blindness to God's grace

Gratitude unleashes the freedom to live content in the moment, rather than being anxious about the future or regretting the past. - Ellen Vaughn

"Arguable the most affluent, materially blessed people in the history of the world, we have become angry, bitter, proud, and ungrateful. We have gotten this false sense of entitlement and the entirely unbiblical idea that God owes us ease and luxury...God loves you, His promises are sure, and your heavenly destiny is settled forever if you've trusted Christ Jesus as your Lord and Savior. But some of the holy work we need to have done in us and through us can only come through the valley of shadow and suffereing. Are you going to be resistant to that? Or are you going to be clay in His hands, knowing that He is intent on shaping you into the image of Christ and wants to use your life for something far bigger than your own comfort, convenience, and pleasure? He wants your life to be part of a grand, eternal redemptive picture that portrays the wonder of His saving grace." Nancy Leigh DeMoss

It is so, so easy for me to slip into ingratitude and complaining. My want to be content in the day. I want to be thankful for God's provision today, instead of worrying about what's going to happen two weeks from now. I want to thank Him for this time that is stretching me. I want to think Him for the opportunity He is giving me to trust Him. I want to trust that He is accomplishing something far bigger in our situation right now than I can imagine.

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways, my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." Isaiah 55: 8-9
As you can see, Conner is just itching to get into the water. Once again, he was inspired by Swiss Family Robinson and was determined to slide down the "water fall"

None of us had swimming shoes, so it was tricky to get around. The rocks under the water were covered in moss and incredibly slippery. He jumped right in.

He didn't cry, but you can see he was quite surprised. The water was very shallow, so it didn't get in his face. I tried to cheer him on and make a big deal about how fun it was, so he ended up being quite proud of himself.
When we got back to the cabin, they swam some more in the pool. I bet they'll sleep good tonight! I know I will:)Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556515126605553470noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6678837181397754832.post-2410483445198064262012-06-18T09:14:00.003-05:002012-06-18T09:17:08.682-05:00firsts

Good morning from the Smoky Mountains or as Conner says, "We're in the backwoods of Tennessee." My little Davy Crocketts have enjoyed cabin life. Hoping to do some hiking and creek playing the next couple days.

Experiencing several "firsts" this trip. The boys are sleeping in bunk beds for the first time, taking turns who gets to sleep on top each night. Here are a few pictures from their first night in bunk beds. They were just a little bit excited. Why, there is Charlie the snake sleeping with Shep.

When I went in to check on them Shep had his pistol under his pillow and Charlie was wrapped around his arm. Never knew rubber snakes were nice to snuggle in bed with at night. The boys are sharing a room with Uncle Si and Uncle Eli. It's been a first for me this trip, not to have all my kiddos sleeping with me. It's nice (and also strange!) that they are big enough to sleep on their own with the big boys.
Conner came up to me in the restaurant and said, "There is a gift store in this restaurant and they have stuffed animals." Nana Wees said they could each pick one out. Conner picked out a dolphin and Shep picked out a Shamu. Then as we were on our way to the check-out he spotted a big yellow rubber snake. Well, so long Shamu. We tried to talk him out of it, but to no avail. He had already named it "Snaky" He is quite pleased with his choice.
Moving is never simple. Moving with kids is definitely not simple. It seemed like we were packing for weeks, because we were. I couldn't pack during the day because I had way to much "help" and I couldn't pack at night because I had a colicky newborn. So, it went on for weeks.

The boys love adventure and new things. They have been so excited to pack up and start the moving process. Here they are helping Zack load up the van with boxes.

So, where are we now? We turned in the keys to our apartment of 3 yrs last Wednesday. We are now all in AR and then going on vacation with Zack's family. We are waiting. Waiting for a job. Waiting to see where we will be next. All our belongings are in storage. We'll be house sitting for a few weeks when we get back to Austin. It's been strange not having an address. Last week was hard. Just trying to take it one day at a time. Learning to be grateful. Learning to live by faith and not by sight, which is easier said that done. Learning what it means to truly persevere in prayer. Trying to embrace the adventure of the next couple months, instead of falling into self-pity.

"Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen." I've been M.I.A and it hasn't totally been because of the new baby. My dear old dell computer won't download the new internet explorer and that's the one blogger is using now. Anyway, I have Zack's mac this afternoon, so here we go!

We have a little girl now! Today she is one month old. We did not find out what we were having and with all the boys in our family, to say we were shocked is an understatement. Julia Evelyn Rose was born at 3:26 pm on April 20th. She weighed 7 lbs, 9 oz and at 21 in long, is my longest baby yet. I think I'm still processing that we had a girl. I would have been completely happy with another boy. I think I felt, "Well, now what do I do??" Buy bows, right??:)

How are we adjusting? Well, going from 2-3 has been hard for me, but partly because of everything else going on in our life right now. Julia is somewhat sensitive (the boys overwhelm her, which is understandable:) and fussy, like Conner and looks exactly like him. She hates her carseat and won't take a passie, BUT she sleeps very well at night. At 3 wks, she was already going 3-4 hrs at night between feedings, which I'm sure is normal, but compared to my boys is absolutely amazing. I'll take some daytime fussiness for all that sleep I'm getting at night! I'm feeling great. My recovery has been quick and easy. So grateful.

At this point, the boys don't pay that much attention to her. I guess I was expecting Conner to be more into her, but I think her birth was anti-climatic for him. We waited and waited for this baby for 9 months and then when she came out she didn't do anything by cry, sleep and eat. They both desperately want her to notice them. I'm hoping when she gets a little they'll enjoy her more, but then again, they are boys, so maybe not:) Conner told me shortly after she was born, "Babies are boring. I don't get to ride my bike much anymore."

She's growing well and starting to be more alert. I'd say Zack and I both feel like we are really enjoying this little girl. Maybe we feel more competent as parents...more relaxed. It has been an adjustment, but it's been fun. We have felt so much love and support by all our family and friends. The generosity of those around us has been such a wonderful blessing.

I was going to post pictures, but they are all on my computer. The boys rest time is over, so uninterrupted computer is over, too.

I'll post more about our up coming fun and crazy summer.Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03556515126605553470noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6678837181397754832.post-18150796094642495252012-04-13T17:56:00.003-05:002012-04-13T18:18:45.206-05:00What is your favorite? The boys and I needed something to do, so we did a little survey after dinner.

What is your favorite.....

color?
